10 facts about search engines
|
- It can take between 2 weeks and 6 months to get listed. (Depending on the
search engine - sometimes even longer)
- Some search engines use “spiders” to crawl the web for new pages.
- “Spider” type search engines tend to use keywords, descriptions and
page titles to compare against the search criteria and give a position in
their listing.
- Some “spiders” search purely on the content of the web page i.e. only
the text that you see on the web page. Their listings are derived from
comparisons to this text.
- Some search engines are “editorially driven”. A human being sits down
and visits your site and “rates it” They decide where you are in their
listings for given directories and search criteria.
- For some search engines, if you are not prepared to pay you do not get listed in their directory.
- If a search engine is “editorially driven” (see 5) then keywords,
descriptions and content will not necessarily help in getting you listed
higher.
- Over 90% of visitors to your site will find you via search engines
- Less than 30% of web pages submitted to search engines are successful in
being listed. You have to keep trying.
- Good web design is the key to successful listing.
